Kyo's a very devil-may-care type of guy. If something doesn't interest him, he doesn't try getting involved with it, though a lot of the time (especially when shenanigans involving his bloodline are involved), he ends up getting dragged into it anyway. But despite this, he's usually pretty well-meaning, and the friends he makes? He's incredibly loyal to them and will do what he can in order to help them out of a bind (preferably ones involving fighting plz). He doesn't always show that he cares, but it's sometimes the little things that prove how loyal he is to his friends, family, and even his girlfriend. The fastest way to make him an enemy of yours is to either threaten someone he cares about or just act like a douche – yes, Kyo's not exactly the nicest guy around, but if you're going to be a complete jerk, expect him to at least say something – if not outright punch you after a while if your reasoning isn't sound enough in his eyes or you punch first.

Even so, he's still a bit of a cocky little shit, and likes teasing everyone, tending to have a bit of a mocking and condescending tone to those that don't know him very well. He has a habit of being generally impolite unless someone's earned his respect, despite their possible rank. However, he's not exactly book-smart, probably not helped by the fact that he's technically never graduated from high school (which has become something of a recurring in-joke in the series), and only seems to be particularly knowledgeable about subjects he's interested in, such as fighting, poetry (though most people don't consider his poems all that great) or the mythos surrounding his family and that of the Yasakani and Yata clans.

Kyo also tends to take thing involving his friends, family, or his “destiny” on a personal level – he considers his rivalry with Iori, for example, to be one based solely off their mutual hatred for each other rather than though their bloodlines. When he works with Iori, it's always a last resort – and there's usually someone to be “team Mom” to try and keep the two from killing each other in the process (i.e. Chizuru or Shingo). He personally believes that his want to fight stronger opponents and his own personal sense of justice are what drives him to do what he does – calling him fatalistic would be the furthest thing from the truth.
